Living an oh-so-techie life

Sociology— a very vague and broad topic.

According to the very famous Webster Dictionary, sociology is the study of human social behavior and its origins, development, organizations, and institutions. In layman’s term, sociology talks about groups of people, their cultures, customs, beliefs and practices. It is an ever changing topic with endless possibilities.

I guess one of the most interesting as well as perplexing things to talk to about sociology is the growing media that is caused by the growing and developing technology. In our generation where in technology is continuously growing and developing, mass media also continues to develop. The influence of mass media has grown exponentially with the advancement of technology. What we see on television, in magazines, and theaters has an effect on us as members of the society.

During the early times, it was all about books, then newspapers and magazines followed, then not so long after photographs, sound recordings, films, radio, television were created. Now, the wonderful new media of the Internet and the social media was developed.

Social media affects our views regarding different topics such as fashion, trends, morals, views about women, men, children, gender and other what-not. During this point in time, everyone just seems to depend on information and communication to keep facing forward in their different activities like home works, researches, education, personal job, health care, miscellaneous and leisure activities, entertainment, travelling and even our personal relationships and other stuff with which we are involved.

Nowadays, it seems normal that the minute you open your eyes, the first thing you look for is your cellphone to check for your messages and your notifications or even to update your status or post a tweet. Truly, the media has greatly affected the way each and everyone of us act. Every news can reach the world with just a single click. Just a single post could either make you, or break you. We make decisions based on the information that we gather from those mass media and interpersonal media sources.

With this vast and immense effect of mass media, we have to be aware and open to the values that we hold, the decisions we make and process through our assumptions, experiences and our knowledge, and the beliefs we harbor and obtain. Even the idea of ‘beauty’ is now altered because of what we see on the televisions and such. We rely on mass media so much that sometimes it turns out to be scary. The scary fact that maybe someday, mass media will take over all of us. We depend on the media as an authority for everything that we want to know. Considering that powerful influence, then, we should know how it really works.

The media could persuade us into things that could possibly be not real. This is why we should always open our minds to the different things that we hear. We shouldn’t be so dependent on merely media alone. We shouldn’t believe everything that is posted on the internet because anyone could actually just make up things and post it into this world-wide-web.

The growing mass media could offer many positive factors but along with these comes the great responsibilities that we should always take in mind.
